My first experience with model aircraft was watching control line models fly in the parking lot of my church. During the summer you could hear the glow engines running in the distance and I would ride my bike over to watch. I can remember one evening close to dusk seeing the bluish flames coming from the exhaust of an airplane engine and thought that was about the coolest thing I’d ever seen, and from that point on I was hooked.
After building and flying control line models as a teenager I took a break from the hobby as marriage, family and career took a front seat till there was enough time and disposable income to return. When my sons Joe and Andrew became old enough we joined a local club, learned to fly RC and enjoy model aviation as much today as the day we started. While my children excelled in the competitive aerobatics side of the hobby I became their pit crew and remained primarily a sport flyer.
Today I fly as much as time permits and occasionally compete in events at the club level. My interests run from 100cc gasers to 3.7v single cell indoor flyers. After being introduced to soaring at my home club several years ago I find myself enjoying that aspect of the hobby more and more.
Model aviation has been a richly rewarding hobby for both me and my family and has given us much more than I’ll ever be able to repay. I’ve had the opportunity to travel and make friends from around the country and from around the world. As much as I love the aircraft that fly, it’s my fellow modelers who keep me coming back out to the field. I continue to believe that the more you give of yourself the more you get back. I encourage all of you all to make an effort to bring model aviation to others. I guarantee you’ll be the better for having done so.
