Wolverine Skyhawks National Model Aviation Day Report

Posted by in Michigan News

On August 17, 2013. The Wolverine Skyhawks were honored to host a West Michigan regional event as a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project.

This was the 1st major event we have held at our new Cedar Springs field, and overall everything went really well! The weather was picture perfect! We had a couple bonus flyovers by a full scale B-17 that was on display and selling flights at the Gerald Ford International Airport. Fox TV-17 camera crew was here and did an interview. The Cedar Springs Fire Department stationed a crew at the event, and we had a visit/static display from the Michigan State Police showing off their new tactical vehicle and some of the gear that they have on board. Raffles, paintball shoot, candy drop for the kids, and several aerobatic demos kept our announcer, Jerry Hough very busy!

We had 30 pilots from West Michigan Clubs register to fly and kept the runway busy all day. Our AMA AVP Lee Fredrickson volunteered a crew from KRAMs to grill 120 chicken quarters, which we supplemented with burgers, brats, hot dogs, and ice cream to feed the 300 spectators that came to see the action . At the end of the day, we had raised over $2000 to send to the Wounded Warrior Project! I thank all of the club members and their spouses that pulled together to make it a safe, successful day!
